Advanced Higher English is an exciting and challenging course requiring hard work and commitment.  As a class pupils will study a range of texts, including the plays of Oscar Wilde, and individually pupils will write dissertations on texts of their choice.  The course allows pupils to develop both their analytical and creative skills and will be largely tutorial based.  The level of independence involved acts as invaluable preparation for university studies and the workplace.

Coursework:

  • Independently produced dissertation: 30% (2500 – 3000 words)
  • Writing folio consisting of two genres of writing: 30%

Exam:

  • Literary Study: 20%

Pupils will be required to write a comparative essay on one of the writers they have studied (not their dissertation texts) using an unseen question within an hour and a half.

  • Textual Analysis: 20%

This will involve one critical analysis on a previously unseen text written in response to an unseen question within an hour and a half.
